Photography from Angels 30

Over the Siskiyous

 The Views from an airplane can be quite spectacular, if you have a fairly clear window, photography from 30,000 ft can be a lot of fun and good images can be acquired, if the right technique is used.

 Use fast shutter speeds and get your lens right up against the glass. Think about that composition and horizon before pulling the trigger.

Somehow this blog seems fitting as I move in to a new career on the professional side, going from an Aerospace Design Engineer at Boeing to a Camera Field Test Engineer with Amazon.

 I have to hand it to the marketing folks at Air New Zealand, this is one fine looking airplane.

My next blog should be coming from the Bay area, somewhere near Sunnyvale. Stay tuned.

Rather than the usual airplane shot, as below, I noticed Mt Baker and that I could align the mountain in the shot of the incoming 747-8 at Pain Field Everett, I live just a few minutes away from the Boeing plant so I get a lot of opportunities to shoot test flights, the above image turned out rather nice and proved a lot more interesting to me than the normal airplane shot.

Shooting classic war birds is a challenging type of photography, the key is to get as much blur in the props as you can to give the image a feel of movement, the problem is, you have to shoot under 1/500 of a sec while panning an aircraft moving at 200+ mph and that is not easy, as I found out. The lower image was at 1/500 of a sec and in difficult light, metering is also a bit tricky, I usually get by with spot metering, but on these small aircraft its easy to miss. More aircraft here.
